Snorrastofa series V

Snorres Edda – i europeisk og islandsk kultur (2009)

Editor: Jon Gunnar Jørgensen, professor in Nordic studies at the University of Oslo.

The book was published in December 2009.

The reasearch network Reykholt and European literacy hosted conferences in Reykholt annually in the years 2002 - 2006. In October 2005 the fourth symposium was held in Snorrastofa.

This book contains articles from the conference where the subject was Snorri Sturluson’s Edda in light of European and Icelandic culture.

Many associate Snorri‘s Edda with mythological stories, but primarily the text is about Norse poetics. With its three main sections the Edda is logically and pedagogically organized as a textbook in poetry. The purpose of this book is to shed light on how Snorri’s Edda reflects a European aspect in Icelandic writing culture, as well as being a result of an Icelandic cultural environment.

The articles are written in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish and English.
